Gone To Teach In Tropics

John Haynes, 46, Farmington businessman, isn't a bit supertitious(sp), if he were he wouldn't have left by plane on April 13 for Guyana.

Haynes has signed up for a year to teach mechanics to the natives of Guyana. He will be employed by Green Construction of Des Moines. The company is excavating bauxite out of strip mine there. He will be teaching the native workmen there to take care of the trucks for transportation and the machinery.

Haynes owns and operates the Haynes Texaco Service station and convenience store at 711 South Fourth Street in Farmington with his wife Carole [Carole Jean]. She plans to continue to operate the business during his absence.

Haynes was a mechanic for seven years at the former Ford Garage in Farmington.

Getting ready for his first trip "out of the country" was an experience in itself. He said, "When the company notified me I had only five days to get ready." Haynes said the company helped a lot by making arrangements for a speedy passport and transportation to Guyana.

One of the biggest headaches was getting the necessary shots. He had to go to Des Moines to get a yellow fever shot. Then there was the mosquito repellant. "Nobody has it on the shelves this time of year," he said. Then there were several trips out of town to get clothes. He said he could take only 44 pounds with him and ship 140 pounds. He was allowed to carry only two bags.

And last but not least, was the time it took to say goodbye to all of his friends here. He spent an afternoon doing that and it just wasn't enough time to get around to everybody.

And why did he want to spend a year in the tropics? "Well, I'm not getting any younger and if I were ever going to do it, this is the time. Besides, the money is good - if I stay a year, otherwise it isn't going to be," he responded.
