Charles E. Gaskell

Charles E. Gaskell, son of Walter and Rose Weimer Gaskell, was born may 21, 1899 at Wapello, Iowa and died Tuesday, June 21, 1983 at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 84.

He served in the United States Navy during World War I.

On January 8, 1932 he married Margaret Tieman of Kahoka, Mo.

They farmed in Louisa and Henry counties, lived in Burlington, and moved to Van Buren County in 1941.

Remaining are three sons, Charles of Fairfield, and Robert and James of Keosauqua, three daughters, Barbara Haynes, Torrington, Wyoming, June McIntosh, Daharan, Saudi Arabia and Betty Bungart, Medford, Minn. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a brother, Alfred of Columbia, Mo., three sisters, Olive Gremmel, Muscatine, Myrtle Gabriel, Wapello, and Marie (Cravy), Whittier, California, other relatives and friends.

Charlie was a member of the Keosauqua Christian Church and had served as Commander of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and World War I Veterans in Keosauqua.

He will be remembered as a devoted father and grandfather, a good neighbor and friend, who was especially interested in the promotion of patriotism and the interests of veterans.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 24, 1983 at 1:30 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with Rev. Bob Patterson of the Keosauqua Christian Church officiating. Interment with military rites in charge of Beer-Barker Post No. 113, American Legion was in Pittsburg Cemetery.
