R. Larry Pollock

Roscoe Larry Pollock, son of Dr. Roscoe and Elizabeth Doud Pollock, was born April 25, 1928 at Douds and died the afternoon of Friday, June 24, 1983 at his home in Douds at the age of 55.

He graduated from Douds High School as Valedictorian of the class of 1945, and earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in education from the University of Iowa, where he was elected president of Theta Xi fraternity during his freshman year.

He served as state representative from Van Buren County in the Iowa Legislature during the 1953-54 biennium, at which time he was the youngest person ever elected to the General Assembly. During the Korean conflict he served in the United States Marines.

An educator throughout his life, he taught in the public schools in Mt. Union, Douds, Williams, Eldon, Interstate 35, and Avoca, all in Iowa. For eighteen years, he held teaching and administrative posts in the Anchorage, Alaska school system, retiring in 1979 and moving back to his home community of Douds in 1980.

On June 22, 1968 he married Frances Jones, a school librarian, in Anchorage. She remains as do his sister, Elizabeth Sutherland of Anchorage, his two brothers, Robert of Kimerling City, Mo. and Davis of Douds, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. His parents and a brother, John, preceded him in death.

Larry and Fran were active in the Methodist Church in Anchorage and upon their return to Douds joined actively in the work of Christ United Methodist Church. He was currently a member of the Pastor-Parish Relations committee of the church. He held memberships in Celestial Lodge No. 413, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, the Douds Community Club, Phi Delta Kappa honorary teacher's fraternity, Van Buren County and National Associations of Retired Teachers, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. He served on the Van Buren Community School board until resigning recently due to ill health.

An accomplished musician, Larry touched the lives of many in the various communities in which he lived through sharing his talents as a soloist, organist and choir director.

His contributions to the development of untold members of young people will live on as fitting memorial to his life as an educator who endeavored to instill in his students spiritual, moral and patriotic values along with their academic learning.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 27, 1983 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds with Dr. Chris Daniel, pastor, and Rev. Harold Harryman officiating. Interment was in Mount. Moriah Cemetery north of Douds. Memorials were established for his church and the American Cancer Society in care of Pedrick Funeral Home, Douds.
