George Hendricks dies at 106

George M. Hendricks, son of David and Martha Culp Hendricks, was born December 19, 1876 in Benton County, Iowa and departed this life Friday, June 10, 1983 at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center in Keosauqua at the age of 106.

On August 29, 1905 he married Eva Bell at Bloomfield. She passed away in 1938.

Surviving are four sons, Stanley and his wife Myrtle of Bonaparte, Wayne of Douds, Robert and his wife of Ottumwa, and Glen and his wife Betty of Keosauqua; a daughter, Kathryn Beggs and her husband Paul of Burkburnett, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

A daughter-in-law, Helen and two grandsons preceded him in death. He was the oldest and last surviving member of a family of four brothers, all of whom lived to be more than 100 years old.

As a youth, Mr. Hendricks moved with his parents to Davis County, where he lived until moving his family to Van Buren County in 1931. He farmed in the Keosauqua and Douds communities and continued to live in his home south of Douds until about 10 years ago. He was Keosauqua's oldest citizen, and was alert and semi-active until the age of 104. He had voted in every presidential election since becoming of age, including the election of 1980, when he went to the polls to cast his vote in person, rather than voting by absentee ballot.

He was a long-time member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church and was active in community affairs throughout his long and busy life.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 12, 1983 at 2 p.m. in the Lebanon United Methodist Church, with Dr. Chris Daniel officiating. Interment was in the Troy Cemetery. A memorial was established for the Van Buren Good Samaritan Center. Pedrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
