Death of Mayor Shocks Birmingham

The town of Birmingham, relatives and friends were shocked and saddened by the death of Gary Yarnell, mayor of Birmingham. He died at the Jefferson County Hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 1983 at 12:28 a.m. following a sudden heart attack at his home.

Mr. Yarnell had served as mayor of Birmingham since his appointment in 1982, and was recently elected to serve another term in the November, 1983, municipal election.

He had already been sworn in for the new term. The Birmingham City Council will have to appoint someone mayor, according to Buelah Scott, city clerk.

Mr. Yarnell was a longtime employee of ACCO-Babcock Inc. in Fairfield. He was a member of the Lick Creek Boys, having been part of this group since its inception, he was also a member of the Birmingham Fire Department, a Boy Scout leader, and coached Little League baseball. He was a member of the Birmingham Presbyterian Church.

Services for Mr. Yarnell were held on Friday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Birmingham Presbyterian Church.

GARY YARNELL

Gary Yarnell, 48, mayor of Birmingham, died at 12:38 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, 1983 at Jefferson County Hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home.

He was born Sept. 27, 1935 at Birmingham, the son of Paul and Cleola Canaday Yarnell, and had lived his entire life in the Birmingham area.

He married Sandra Fritts of Fairfield, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Dee Ann Yarnell of San Jose, Calif.; two sons, Greg of Keosauqua and Kent of Birmingham; two grandchildren; his father of Stockport; and a sister, Pauline Brush of Fairfield. His mother preceded him in death.

Mr. Yarnell was a longtime employee of ACCO-Babcock Inc. in Fairfield. He was a member of the Lick Creek Boys, having been part of the group since its inception, he was also a member of the Birmingham Fire Department, a Boy Scout leader, and coached Little League base ball, and intermural basketball. He was a member of the Birmingham Presbyterian Church.

Services for Mr. Yarnell were held on Friday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Birmingham Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charles McCracken and the Rev. David Kennedy officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham. Burch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials to the Birmingham Little League or the First Responders may be left at the Funeral Home.
