Ethel Black

Ethel Byers Black, 88, a former Birmingham resident died March 28, 1983 at the Sierra Convalescent Home in Carson City, Nev., where she had resided for the past three years.

The daughter of John M. and Cora Bell Byers, Mrs. Black was born April 14, 1894 in Birmingham, Iowa. She married Arthur Black of Dallas City, Ill., Dec. 23, 1920, making their home in Dallas City. He died 35 years ago on March 25, 1948. She is also preceded in death by two brothers and one son-in-law.

Mrs. Black is survived by two children: a son Albert, Arthur Black and wife Rilla of San Ana, Calif.; a daughter, Elizabeth Hobson of Carson City, Nev., four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also three sisters: Mrs. Rhea Ecklund and Mrs. Pitt (Thelma) Johnston, both of Birmingham and Carabelle C. Caldwell of Woodland, Texas, a brother Frank Byers of Nysca, Oreg., and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Black was a graduate of the Birmingham High School with the class of 1913 and also attended Parsons College.

Six years ago Mrs. Black's daughter Elizabeth, came to Dallas City to care for her mother. Three years later Elizabeth's mother fell, fracturing her hip. Mrs. Black was flown to a convalescent home in Carson City, to be near her daughter.

Last rites were held March 30 at 8 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Carson City, Memorial Day weekend Mrs. Black's ashes will be brought back to Dallas City, Ill., to be buried by her husband.
