Verna M. Hissem

Verna M. Hissem, daughter of Lewis P. and Laura Woolley Plowman, was born Aug. 20, 1886 in Chequest Township southwest of Douds and died Thursday, March 10, 1983, at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center in Keosauqua at the age of 96.

On Thanksgiving day, Nov. 26, 1908, she married George A. Hissem at her parent's home. They spent their active life farming in Chequest Township. Mr. Hissem preceded her in death in 1961. Also preceding her in death were her parents, a sister, Alma Hissem, and a brother, Delber Plowman.

Remaining are a sister, Willa Plowman of Keosauqua, a brother, Wilmer Plowman of Ottumwa, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was a long-time member and Past Matron of Twin City Chapter, No. 258, Order of Eastern Star at Douds. For many years she served as Treasurer of the Chapter.

Verna will be remembered for her ready wit and keen interest in community affairs.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12, 1983 at 3 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with Rev. Harold Harryman officiating. Interment was in Leando Cemetery.
