Bennie Salters

Benjamin E. "Bennie" Salters, son of John and Lillie Carter Salter, was born Aug. 31, 1909 in Douds and died early Tuesday, April 19, 1983 at his home in Douds at the age of 73.

Bennie lived his life in the Douds community except for time spent in the Army during World War II when he served in Europe. He had been a coal miner and worked with his brother, Glen, in plumbing, carpentry and cement work. They also sold melons and vegetables. Bennie will be remembered as an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman, a good neighbor and friend.

Remaining are three sisters, Lala Kaleff and Florence Hartsell of douds and Ruth Hartsell of Westland, Mich., three brothers, Theodore of Douds, Fred of Montrose and Carl of Port Charlotte, Fla., and several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Two brothers, Asa and Glen, and a half-brother, Kelsey, preceded him in death.

He was a member of John Hyson Reneker Post No. 494, American Legion at Douds.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 22, 1983 at 1:30 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with Rev. Harold Harryman officiating. Interment with military rites in charge of John Hyson Reneker Post was in Leando Cemetery. A memorial was established for Van Buren County Memorial Hospital.

Death Rule Suicide

DOUDS - The death of Bennie Salters of Douds has been ruled suicide by Van Buren County Medical Examiner James T. Worrell.

Slaters died of a self inflicted gun shot wound sometime early Tuesday morning, April 19, 1983. He was discovered later Tuesday at his residence in Douds, by his sister, also a Douds resident.
