HAZEL E. WATKINS

Hazel E. Watkins, daughter of Harry and Mae Stingley McElwain, was born April 15, 1908 at Eustis, Nebraska, and departed this life Sunday, September 26, 1982, at Ottumwa Hospital, at the age of 74.

She moved with her parents to Iowa in 1920 and graduated from Keosauqua High School with the class of 1925.

In 1926, she married Earl Watkins, who preceded her in death in 1967. Also preceding her in death were two infant daughters, Nona and Jacqueline, two granddaughters, a great-granddaughter, and a brother, Neal McElwain.

Surviving are four daughters, Iris Parsons and her husband John of Knoxville, Shirley Riley and her husband William of Des Moines, Patricia Cook and her husband Ellsworth of East Pleasant Plain, and Judith Huffman and her husband Jim of Keosauqua; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Doris Trimble of Ottumwa and Garnet Whitney of Huachuca, Arizona; a brother, Arthur McElwain of Cashmere, Washington; other relatives and friends.

Hazel was a member of the Keosauqua Congregational Church and for many years was a leader of the Brownie Girl Scouts. She was one of the early employees of Van Buren County Memorial Hospital, and continued to serve as a nurse's aide until her recent retirement.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 29, at 11 a.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with Rev. Paul Knupp officiating. A memorial was established for the American Heart for the American Association. Interment was in Purdom Cemetery at Keosauqua.
