DR. HAROLD MEYER

Dr. Harold Douglas Meyer, 75, of Nevada, died Saturday, February 20, 1982, in Harlingen, Texas, where he and his wife were spending the winter, of a heart attack.

He was born January 10, 1907, in Leedey, Oklahoma, the son of Murray Clifford and Emma Mae Cooper Meyer. On September 1, 1928, he married Louida Vehslage at Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Dr. Meyers' family moved from Oklahoma to southeast Iowa when he was eight years old. He attended the rural schools, graduating from Keosauqua High School in 1924. He received his doctorate degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines in 1931 and began his practice that year in Cantril, Iowa. In 1933, he moved his practice to La Verne, Iowa, until 1939, when he purchased an interest in the General Hospital at Algona, Iowa. Dr. Meyer continued his practice there until 1957, when he went to Sioux City, later moving to Nevada in 1961, where he practiced until retiring five years ago.

He has been the recipient of several community and professional awards. In 1976 he was named "Friend of Education" by the Nevada Community Education Association. He was honored in 1963 as "Physician of the Year" by the Iowa Society of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons. He had served as president of that organization and had been a member of the Iowa Osteopathic Board of Medical Examiners.

Since retiring from his practice five years ago, he had been teaching summer school in the Osteopathic School in Des Moines.

He was honored by the Nevada Rotary, of which he was a member, with the "Rotarian of the Year" award in 1978.

Dr. Meyer was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church, Ames.

He is survived by his wife, Louida; his father, Murray C. of Bonaparte, Iowa; two sons, George of Mason City and Douglas of Humboldt; a brother, Sherman of Parker, Arizona, a half brother, Walter, of Bonaparte; a sister, Opal Bensene of Spencer; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death, by his mother and two sisters, Orpha Black and Juanita Achenbach.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 24, at the Ryan Funeral Home, Nevada, with Rev. Richard G. Kapfer officiating. Burial was in the East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Algona, Iowa, with commital services at 2 p.m. by Rev. Sohn of the Algona Trinity Lutheran Church.
