HAROLE "PAPPY" CROSS

Harold "Pappy" Cross, 69, of Westfir, Oregon, died January 6, 1982, at his home. He was born on May 2, 1912, at Van Buren County, Iowa, to Elza G. and Effie Alexander Cross. He grew up and received his education to Iowa.

On February 24, 1924, Pappy and Alma Thoensen were united in marriage at Davenport, Iowa. Pappy worked for the Swiss Ice Cream Company until moving to Westfir in September of 1948. Pappy worked for the Edward Hines Lumber Company Sawmill as an unstacker operator for 20 years. Pappy received his nickname while playing softball on the many leagues that he participated in over the years. He was a charter member of the Oakridge Church of the Nazarene and the Gideons. He taught Sunday School for many years and shared his love of young people. In 1964, Pappy was selected as Citizen of the Year. He directed the Oakridge Singspiration and had sung at many weddings. He also had served on the local board of the credit union. Pappy loved sports of all kinds, especially golf, and was an avid Oregon Duck fan. He will also be remembered for the poems he wrote.

Pappy is survived by his wife; his son, Michael and Marjorie Cross of Eugene; his daughter, Nancy, and Norma Penner of Klamath Falls; brothers Richard Cross, Seattle Washington, Leslie Cross of Eugene, Otis Cross of Southern California; sisters Mildred Schmidt and Madeline, Davis, both of Oakridge and Ione Neads of Arkansas; and seven grandchildren.

Services were Saturday, January 9, 1982, at 2 p.m. at the Oakridge Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Craig Short officiating.

Memorials are preferred to the Harold Cross Fund at the Nazarene Church.
