Martha M. Chapman was born in Germany Sept. 17, 1878, daughter of John D. and Anna Margaret Reil Schrotder [Schroeder]. She passed away at 5:15 a.m. at the Hainline Rest Home at Bonaparte, Iowa. Aug. 5, 1964 at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 19 days. She was in failing health a number of years.
She was married to Charles W. Douglas on July 3, 1900. To this union was born one son, Lester W. Douglas, who resides at Warrensburg, Mo. She was married to Robert E. Chapman, Feb. 21, 1906 at Keosauqua, Iowa, who preceded her in death June 25, 1937. To this union was born one son Wm. Lee Chapman, who resides at Bonaparte, Iowa, and one daughter, Helen Chapman, who preceded her in death June 10, 1963.
Other survivors include two half-sisters, Sophia Chapman of Bonaparte, Iowa and Martha Thompson of Dugald, Canada; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
She crossed the ocean from Germany at the age of seven and attended school at Gladbrook, Iowa and Charles City, Iowa, before coming to the Bonaparte area.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Ladies Aid Society and the Royal Neighbors of America for 55 years.
Services were held Friday, Aug. 7 at 2 P.M. at the Bonaparte Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Willard Courtney officiating. Burial at the Bonaparte Cemetery.
