Harold V. Horstman, 86, of rural Bonaparte died at 2:14 am Wednesday July 17, 2013 at University Hospital, Iowa City. He was born Dec. 2, 1926 in rural Bonaparte to Phillip Charles and Emma Grace Miller Horstman and married Joanna M. Hendrichsen April 28, 1956 in Bonaparte Presbyterian Church. She died Jan. 22, 2013.

They farmed near Bonaparte. Harold also sold DeKalb seed carn for many years, had worked at Bonaparte Mill and drove a Harmony School bus. He was a devoted husband and father, enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's sport events, concerts and other activities as well as playing cards, hunting and fishing, hunting mushrooms and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Harold served in the U.S. Naval Air Corps during world War II, was a member of Bonaparte United Church where he had been an elder, Sunday School teacher and had served in other capacities, was a 60 year member of Sargent-Osweiler Post No. 563, American Legion and served as president of the former Bonaparte Lions Club.

Surviving are a son, Kenny Horstman (Candy) of Bonaparte, two daughters, Kathy Van Winkle of Hillsboro and Lori Bank (Lloyd) of Salem, six grand children, a great-granddaughter, a sister, Dorothy Horstman of Bonaparte, a sister-in-law, Alice Horstman of Denmark, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Harlan Horstman and a son-in-law, Alan Van Winkle.

Funeral srvices will be at 10:30 am Saturday July 20, 2013 in Bonaparte United Church, Rev. Goldie Laymon and Rev. Richard Eis officiating, burial will be in Bonaparte Cemetery with military rites by Sargeant-Osweiler Post 563. Visitation will open at 2 pm Friday at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with family present 5-7 pm.
