When a young man Mr. Mitchell came west. In 1859 he went to California by ox team with N. G. Brown. He stayed in California then years and was a miner and blacksmith. Returning to Iowa in 1869 he was employed by Judge Meek on the farm, later he worked on the Bonaparte dam and [finally?] entered the woolen mills where for thirty-two years he was a valued employe [sic]. He stopped work in the woolen mills a little more than 3 years ago because of ill health.
