DIED--At her home in Birmingham, Thursday, Dec. 21st, at 7 p.m. Eliza J., wife of Newton L. Calhoun, aged 33 years, 4 months and 11 days.
Eliza Jane Torrence was born in Lick Creek township, Van Buren county, Iowa, August, 1(6)th, 1859, and her entire life except four years was spent in this neighborhood. The visited [sic] in Pennsylvania two years, and two years was spent with her sister in Jamestown, Kansas.
She was married to her now bereaved husband November 14th, 1889, and after a short time spent on the farm southeast of town, moved to Birmingham, where they have resided since.
During the union protracted meeting held in Birmingham about eighteen years ago by Rev.'s Bergen and Prather, when over seventy conversions were professed, she was among the number, and united with the Presbyterian church and has ever since been a zealous christian and earnest worker in the church. She has not been in good health for over a year, and when the Foote Brothers, evangelists, visited this place, she became deeply interested in their work, and the excitement and strain on her nerves became so great, that Monday evening, Nov. 11th, her mind gave way, and not until a few hours before her death did she regain consciousness sufficient to recognize her husband, mother and sister. But even that short time was a great relief to the sorrowing ones around her.
During her illness everything possible was done to make her suffering as light as possible, both by her physician and husband, mother and sisters, and the end came as peaceful and quiet as a beautiful May morning.
She was a woman of many noble qualities and was greatly loved and esteemed by all who knew her. The church has lost a faithful christian worker, the husband a fond and affectionate wife, the mother an obedient and loving daughter, the sisters a devoted sister, the community a noble and true citizen.
She leaves a husband, mother, three sisters and a host of friends to mourn her death.
The funeral occurred from the family residence, Saturday at 10 a.m., Rev. McNary, her pastor, having charge of the services, assisted by Rev.'s Pool and Richie, and was attended by a large number of our citizens.
The family have the sincere sympathy of all in their sad bereavement, [ ] in return desire us to express their sincere thanks for the many kind deeds and expressions during her sickness and their bereavement.
