FORT MADISON, IA - Services for Alger H. Mertens, 80, of Dubuque, who died of a stroke at his home Tuesday, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church here. Mr. Mertens owned and operated Mertens Service Station in Fort Madison for 42 years. Survivors include his wife, Zoe; two daughters, Monica Walters of Davenport, and Theresa Bartlett of Fort Madison; a brother, Joseph of Fort Madison; two sisters, Lavina Maher and Matilda Mertens, both of Fort Madison, and three grandchildren.
