Cornelia C. Hodges

Cornelia Crawford Hodges, daughter of James and Annie Craig Crawford, was born December 3, 1888 at Green Ridge, Mo., and died Sunday, June 24, 1984 at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center in Keosauqua at the age o f95.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Central Missouri State Teachers College and later studied at the University of Chicago.

On Aug. 15, 1922 she married Edmund L. Hodges at California, Mo. She was a teacher and he was the superintendent of schools at Cantril from 1920-22. Mr. Hodges died in 1923. Two brothers also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Hodges was Van Buren County Superintendent of Schools from 1927 until 1942. She also taught at Stockport and was Superintendent of Schools at Douds. Following her retirement from education she was an agent for Equitable Life Insurance Co. of Iowa for a number of years. In 1975 she was honored as Keosauqua's Citizen of the Year.

She was a member of the Keosauqua United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women, Order of Eastern Star, and the Van Buren County Retired Teachers Association, and had been a member of P.E.O.

Remaining are a daughter, Dr. Rachel Harwood and her husband Ted of McCall, Idaho, a grandson, Dr. Donald E. Woods, Grandview, Washington, two great grandchildren, David and Margaret Woods, a sisters, Hortense Crawford of Keosauqua, other relatives and friends. She was an educator of unexcelled dedication and made a great contribution to the welfare of her community and the county as a whole.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 26, 1984 at 2 p.m. in the Keosauqua United Methodist Church, with Rev. Harold Harryman and Rev. Louise Spears, pastor, officiating. Interment was in Masonic Cemetery, California, Mo., with graveside services in charge of Rev. Harryman at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 27. Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.
