Dr. H.J. Gilfillan
Dr. H.J. Gilfillan, the youngest of the brothers that founded the Gilfillan Clinic in Bloomfield, died Saturday at the Davis County Hospital.
His death came at the hospital that was born and grew so much because of the patient load that was funnelled to it by the Gilfillan Clinic, which Dr. H.J. had helped found with his brothers in 1946.
Dr. Gilfillan had suffered a stroke earlier this year and had returned to the Davis County Hospital following several weeks of treatment at an Iowa City Hospital.
He was the youngest of six sons born to Dr. Homer John Gilfillan Sr. and Clara Moon Gilfillan. After graduation from the University of Iowa, he received specialist training in ophthalmology and otolaryngology. A stint in the Army Medical Corps preceded his return to southern Iowa to join his brothers, Bill, C.D.N. and Earl in founding the Gilfillan Clinic.
Attracting specialists in several medical fields, the Gilfillan Clinic grew from its first quarters on the north side of the square to the present building, which at one time was the Southern Iowa Normal school.
The Gilfillan Clinic became widely known for its specialized medical treatment with Dr. H.J. practicing eye, ears, nose and throat specialties. The Gilfillan Clinic enabled Bloomfield to become known as "Southern Iowa's Medical Center" with patients coming here from as many as 26 states. At its zenith, the Gilfillan Clinic had a staff of 17 physicians.
He was the last of the Gilfillan brothers to retire from active practice, doing so on Jan. 1, 1986. (See obituary on Page 2.)
