DR. GEORGE W. GILFILLAN

Dr. George William Gilfillan, 51, prominent Bloomfield physician and surgeon, one of the founders of the Gilfillan clinic, died at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at the St. Joseph hospital in Ottumwa. He had been ill since last September.

He was one of six brothers, all of whom are active in carrying on the family's medical tradition. His father, Dr. Home J. Gilfillan, Sr., is now retired and living in Bloomfield. His grandfather, Dr. J.W. Gilfillan, was a pioneer physician in Van Buren county. First of the medical Gilfillans was Dr. Alexander Gilfillan, who started his practice in Philadelphia in 1796.

Dr. Gilfillan was born at Trenton in Henry county, Iowa, Oct. 29, 1899. He was graduated from Mt. Pleasant high school and received his degree in medicine at the University of Iowa in 1924. He later took graduate work at the Harvard university school of medicine. He served his internship at St. Mark's hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.

From 1929 until 1933 Dr. Gilfillan was a physicians and surgeon at Pulaski. Then he moved his offices to Bloomfield, where he was active until 1943. In World War II he served in teh navy as a lieutenant commander for two years, having sea duty in the Pacific area.

In 1946, after his return from service, Dr. Gilfillan with three of his brother-doctors, established the Gilfillan clinic. They are Dr. C.D.N. Gilfillan, Dr. Ear. Gilfillan and Dr. Homer G. Gilfillan, Jr.

He was a member of the staff at the St. Joseph hospital in Ottumwa and the Davis county hospital in Bloomfield.

Surviving are his wife, Mable, to whom he was married Sept. 29, 1923, at Marion and daughter, Joy, of Bloomfield; his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Home J. Gilfillan, Sr., of Bloomfield; three sisters, Mrs. Wallace Milstead of New York City, Miss Esther Gilfillan fo Bloomfield and Mrs. Harry Mahannah of Cherokee; and the five brother doctors, Dr. Harold Gilfillan of San Francisco, Dr. Edwin Gilfillan of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Dr. Earl E. Gilfillan, who continues to make his home at Memphis, Mo., and Drs. C.D.N. and Homer Gilfillan, Jr., of Bloomfield.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Bloomfield Methodist church with the Rev. Carl Wilson officiating.
