Dr. Earl E. Gilfillan dies here Sunday

Dr. Earl E. Gilfillan, 82, one of the founders of the Gilfillan Clinic, died Sunday at the Davis County Hospital.

Dr. Gilfillan established his first practice in Pulaski and three years later moved to Memphis, Mo. After serving with the Navy in World War II, he and his brothers founded the Gilfillan Clinic where he specialized in internal medicine. He continued to live in Mempihs(err) and commuted to the Clinic before moving to Bloomfield several years ago.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Priester Funeral Chapel in Bloomfield.

DR. EARL GILFILLAN

Dr. Earl Eugene Gilfillan, 82, of Bloomfield died May 7, 1989, at Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield.

He was born April 28, 1907, in Mount Pleasant to Clara Moon and Dr. Homer John Gilfillan Sr. He graduated from Milton High School in 1924 and attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant for two years. He received his doctor of medicine degree in 1931 from University of Iowa. He served his internship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and established a practice in Pulaski, where he remained for three years.

He moved to Memphis, Mo., where he later joined the Navy and served in World War II with the commission of lieutenant commander. In 1946, he and his brothers founded Gilfillan Clinic, where he specialized in internal medicine. He lived in Memphis, Mo., for 30 years and commuted to Bloomfield before moving there last year. He was a member of American Legion, former member of Davis County Medical Society, Iowa State Medical Association, and past president of Scotland-Clark-Lewis Medical Society. He married Luzon McClurg in September 1928, in Jacksonville, Ill.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Gertrude Oaks of Fort Worth, Texas; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Edwin Gilfillan of Englewood, Fla.; and a sister, Dorothy Mahannah of Fort Dodge.

The service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 1989 at 2 p.m. at Priester Funeral Chapel in Bloomfield, the Rev. Ellis E. Andrews of Bloomfield United Methodist Church officiating. Burial with military rites was in IOOF Cemetery.

Memorials have been established to Bloomfield United Methodist Church or IOOF Avenue of Flags.
