Sandra Cox killed near Libertyville

Sandra Jeanine Cox, 39, Cantril, was killed about 9:55 p.m. Monday when the van she was driving collided with a train one-half mile north of Libertyville in Jefferson County.

Mrs. Cox, who conducted Sandra Jeanine's School of Dance in Bloomfield and other cities, was southbound on Highway 303. Authorities said Mrs. Cox apparently did not see the train. The left corner of her vehicle struck the right corner of the engine of the westbound Rock Island freight train.

The train carried the van approximately 50 yards following the crash. Mrs. Cox was taken to the Jefferson County Hospital by ambulance and was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mrs. Cox was born May 1, 1938 in Ottumwa to Lowell and Lucille Moss Critchlow. She was married Jim Cox on Jan. 17, 1960 at the Cantril Methodist Church of which she was a member.

Survivors include her widower; two daughters, Melody and Alyse, both at home; her parents; one brother, Terry of Ottumwa; one sister, Cherly Goaly of Shelbyville, Ind.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Cantril United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ed Kail. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery. The Wellborn Funeral Home of Milton is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established to the Cancer Society. Davis Countyans wishing to make memorial contributions may do so by calling Mrs. Linda Prevo or Mrs. Virginia Pabst.
