DR. JAY Q. BELL

A prominent Fairfield civic leader, Dr. Jay Q. Bell, 61, of 204 Iowa Ave., died at 4 a.m. Saturday, May 8 at University Hospitals, Iowa City. He had been a leukemia patient there for five weeks.

He was born January 7, 1921 at Milton to Robert Clayton and Rhoda Elva Marshall Bell. He married Dorothy R. Topping August 27, 1946 at Stockport.

He was an elder of the First United Presbyterian church, served three terms on the Fairfield school board, was on the board of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce and First National Bank, was past president of Fairfield Lions club, and was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Assn.

He started his practice in Fairfield in 1953 and was a member of the clinic on US 34 west of Fairfield.

Surviving: his wife two daughters, Sue Ellen Bell, Ames, and Martha Alice Bell of Palantine, Ill. two sons, David of Decorah, and Scott, Vera Cruz, Mexico; two brothers, Clayton Bonar Bell, Milton and Dr. Max E. Bell, Kirksville, Mo.

Funeral: 1 a.m. May 11, 1982, First United Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Carl Riggs officiating with interment at Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham.
