Mrs. Helen Spencer

Mrs. Helen Spencer, 88, died about 7:15 P.M., Tuesday night, May 12, at the Park View Retirement Home in Wayland.

She had lived her entire life in the Stockport community except for the past ten years while she was a patient in the nursing home.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 15, at 2:00 P.M. at the United Methodist Church, Stockport with the Rev. Dwight C. Bonham in charge. Burial was in the Spencer Cemetery near Stockport. Arrangements were in charge of the Weston Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield. Pallbearers were Howard Oberman, Myron Carlson, Gene Clark, Lloyd Johnson, Rex Swan, and Gene Fordyce.

Mrs. Helen Spencer was born Nov. 14, 1881, near Stockport, the daughter of George W. and Elnora Walker Johnston. On May 18, 1905 she was married to William H. Spencer, who died June 26, 1958.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Stockport, where she had taught a Sunday School class for 55 years. Besides her church work she was very active in community affairs. She had served on the County Board of Education, County president of Federated Clubs, director of Spencer School and served on the election board for many years. She was also active in O.E.S.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. L.E. McAfee, of Brighton; one grandchild, Mrs. David Hamilton of Marshalltown; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Fred L. Johnston, Libertyville; and Walker A. Johnston, Des Moines, and a sister, Mrs. Bessie Newman, Stockport.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a son.
