Mrs. Samuel Kitchen

Mrs. Vernie Edna Kitchen 77, Brighton, died at the Jefferson County Hospital Thursday morning where she had been a patient for 8 days. She had been in failing health several years.

She was born Jan. 18, 1893, in Batavia, the daughter of Walter and Florence Skirvin Maring. She was a lifetime resident of Jefferson County and was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Her marriage to Samuel W. Kitchen took place March 15, 1909. He survives as do four daughters, Mrs. Neva Steffensmeier of Oakdale, Mrs. Kathryn Duncun of Hillsboro, Mrs. Barbara Melton of Fairfield, and Mrs. Geraldine Peebler of Batavia; five sons, Paul of Fairfield, Donald of Brighton, Sam Jr. of Fairfield, Carrol of La Harpe, Ill., and Gerald of Batavia; 29 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and one brother, Charles Maring of Bettendorf.

The service was at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 21 at Campbell Funeral Chapel in Batavia, conducted by the Rev. John Nye. Burial was in Batavia Cemetery.
