George L. Ripley

George L. Ripley, 55, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, March 17 at the St. Luke's Hospital there.

He was born Aug. 10, 1914 near Selma. His early life was lived in the Selma and Douds community where as an auto mechanic, he was associated with his father in the garage business. He operated a Studebaker dealership in Clarion and was an instructor at the Denver Automotive Institute at Denver. In Cedar Rapids, he was general manager of the Iowa Automotive and Diesel Institute Inc. He was a member of the Elks Lodge.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Clair Ripley of Selma; his widow, Jennie and son Fred, both of Denver, Colo.; five brothers, Henry of Perry, Clair Jr. of Phoenix, and James, Robert and Donald, all in the U.S. Navy; and six sisters, Mrs. Ida Shriver of Sewal, Mrs. Rosetta Wright of Burlington, Mrs. Beulah Keast of St. Catherine's, Ontario, Mrs. Darlene Bradfield of Agency and Mrs. Anna Murray and Mrs. Betty Gatlin, both of Ottumwa.

From an early age George's interest centered on things mechanical. From his days as a helper in his father's garage, through the ownership of his own firm and his years as an instructor and school manager he was always ready and willing to share not only his outstanding mechanical ability but his material resources (she received word that her sister's husband Charles Spring of) as well with others. His generosity will live on in the memories of his family, friends, students, and unknown others in the communities where he resided.

Services were held Saturday, March 21 at 2 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with the Rev. Willis Grant, United Methodist pastor, officiating. Vocalists were Mrs. Keith A. Smith and Mrs. Robert Pedrick, accompanied by Mrs. Max Caves. Pall bearers were Leslie Zillman, Mike Klouda, Louis Leitheiser, Charles Schurtz, Mike Connely and Lloyd Andre. Interment was in the Iowaville Cemetery near Selma.
