Arthur James Secor

Arthur James Secor, 83, Keosauqua, long-time Van Buren county civic booster, died Sunday, March 29, at 9:00 p.m. in Van Buren County Memorial Hospital, Keosauqua. He had suffered a stroke in his home two weeks ago.

He was born June 25, 1886, near Melbourne, the son of William and Anna Secor. June, 1917, he married Julia Warden in Melbourne. Mr. Secor received his BA degree in agriculture from Iowa State University at Ames in 1905. In 1930 he was awarded a master of science degree in agriculture, division of forestry at ISU.

Mr. Secor was a 60-year veteran of conservation and horticulture work, widely recognized as an authority.

He taught high school agriculture at Pipestone, Minn., before moving to Keosauqua 52 years ago. He was a Van Buren County extension officer until 1941, later operated a farm management service.

Mr. Secor was the recipient of the first Outstanding Citizen award presented by the Keosauqua commercial club. He was the author of two books, numerous poems and was an active musician.

Mr. Secor was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters and two brothers.

Surviving are a daughter, Doris Secor, at home; 2 brothers, Wilbur of Melbourne and Perry of Ft. Dodge; and a sister, Mrs. Clara Dysart, Los Altos, Calif.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the Keosauqua Congregational church, with the Rev. Millard Marshall officiating, assisted by Rev. Ronald Cochran of the Farmington Baptist Church. Burial will be at Purdom Cemetery.
