Hillsboro Man, Wife Killed in Accident

A Hillsboro man and his wife were killer(err) Monday when their car was struck by a Burlington railroad freight train, east of Fairfield.

The dead persons were identified as Edward Deao, 66, ad his wife Lola, 51. Authorities said the accident occurred about 6 miles east of Fairfield on a county road crossing.

The engineer of the train said he had been sounding his train's horn as it approached the crossing, but that he did not see the car until the last minute.

Investors said the eastbound trains was traveling about 50 mph when it hit the car, and that the car was dragged about a half mile before the train could be stopped.

The car was headed south when the accident occurred. Walter Johnson of Oquawka, Ill., engineer of freight No. 684, said that Mrs. Deao was driving and made no attempt to stop. The trains struck the car broadside.

Joint services will be held at the Hillsboro Baptist Church at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, the Rev. Levi Winfrey officiating. Burial will be in the Hillsboro Cemetery.

Edward Eli Deao was born May 1, 1903, in Kansas, the son of Orlando and Anna Jacoby Deao. he was reared and educated in Louisa County, Iowa, and was a retired farmer.

Mr. Deao was married to Lola Mae Moore at Fairfield on Feb. 12, 1941.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Gene Niece, Hillsboro, and Lana Sue Deao, at home; brother ARthur Deao, Lockridge; half-brother Earl Deao, Osceola, and 3 grandchildren.

Mrs. Deao was born Sept. 7, 1918, at Wapello, the daughter of Edward and Maggie Clark Moore. She was reared and educated at Mountain View, Mo.

Surviving are the daughters and grandchildren; he mother, Mrs. Maggie Page of Hillsboro; two brothers, William Moore, Birmingham, and Lloyd Moore of Oklahoma, and sister, Mrs. Theodore Prevett of Fairfield.
