John E. Stecker

John E. Stecker, 80, of Hillsboro, died Saturday, July 26, at 9 p.m. in the Fairfield Convalescent Home after a lengthy illness.

He was born Nov. 25, 1888 at McPherson, Kans., the son of John and Mary Schurtz Stecker. He spent his childhood at Morton, Ill.

(Mis) marriage to Nellie Mae Meyers took place on Dec. 26, 1916 at Tremont, Ill. and she survives.

He was a farmer. They moved to rural Hillsboro in 1920. Mr. Stecker was a member of the Harrisburg Baptist church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons: Dean of Hillsboro, Lester of Bonaparte, and Gilbert of Albuquerque, N.M.; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Rhea) Brombaugh of Stockport, Mrs. Phil (Irma) Elliott of Bonaparte and Mrs. William (Neva) Carter of Stockport; one brother, Andy Stecker of Pekin, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Allen (Elizabeth) Witt of Fairfield; and 22 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son in infancy, several sisters and one brother.

The funeral service was held Tuesday, July 29, at 2 p.m. in the Harrisburg Baptist Church, north of Bonaparte, with the Rev. I.E. Winfrey officiating. Burial was in Vale cemetery.

Miller's Home for Funerals in Farmington was in charge of arrangements.
