Gertrude Gray

Gertrude Faye House, daughter of Noah and Daisy Thompson House, was born in Bonaparte, Iowa, on Dec. 2, 1917. She married Arden Gray of Farmington, Iowa, on June 27, 1942 at Kahoka, Mo., and from this union three children were born: Callen Lynn, Lana Terril, and Kendall Lee.

Even though both sons were afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy from birth and were in need of constant attention until their deaths, Gertie maintained her faith in life, and persistently strived for a degree in education in order to continue teaching. She received this degree from Iowa Wesleyan College.

She was a member of the Bonaparte United Methodist Church, Bonaparte Cemetery Association, Iowa State Education Association, National Education Association, the Local Teachers Association and past president of the Bonaparte Alumni Association.

Gertie succumbed to cancer at 1:25 A.M. on April 13, 1969 at the Memorial Hospital at Keosauqua. During her prolonged struggle with this dreaded disease, she never relinquished her will to live. Her bravery was acclaimed by all those who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and two sons, Callen and Kendall. She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband Arden; her daughter Lana, and her son-in-law, Toss Anthony, and numerous relatives and friends.
