Clayton R. Slutts

Clayton Reed Slutts, son of John and Goldie McDonald Slutts, was born Aug. 27, 1908, at Mount Zion, Iowa, and departed this life Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1969, at University Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 60. His early life was spent in Van Buren County, and he graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1926.

On Aug. 1, 1929, he was married to Mary Sanford of Douds at Denver, Colorado.

Mr. Slutts was a long-time employee of the Rock Island Railroad in the Maintenance of Way Department, and as a result of his assignments the family had lived in several locations, including Douds, points in several western states and for the past 11 years at Keokuk. He was Secretary-Treasurer of Lodge No. 963, Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees of the Rock Island at Eldon.

Remaining to mourn his passing are his widow, two sons, Conley of Eldon and Dennis of Lone Tree, his mother of Eddyville, six grandchildren, three brothers, Kenneth of Eddyville, Glenn of Eldon, and Ralph of Keokuk, two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Witt of Keosauqua and Mrs. Lucille Gibson of Ottumwa, numerous other relatives and many friends. His father preceded him in death.

He will be remembered as a good citizen, a faithful husband, father and friend, and a loyal and competent railroad man.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 23, 1969, at 2 p.m. at the Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with the Rev. Eugene Schmidt, pastor of the Zion Bible Church, officiating. Pall bearers were Roland Sellers, Emmett Ewing, Donald Morris, Verlon Nichols, Ernest Irvin, and Ray Boyd. Interment was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
