Roy O. Poling, 75, 1405 Avenue D, Ft. Madison, former chief of police at Ft. Madison, died suddenly at about 4:00 P.M. Monday, Oct. 28, at his home.

Mr. Poling was a member of the Ft. Madison police department for 23 years. He retired as chief in 1955.

A resident of Ft. Madison since 1923, he was born Feb. 16, 1893, near Mt. Sterling, Iowa.

On June 21, 1923, at Centerville, he married Cecil Duckworth, who died Jan. 8, 1945. On March 4, 1952, he married Oleda Underwood, at Ft. Madison, who survives.

Mr. Poling was a member of the First Christian church and a former elder of the church. He was also a member of Claypoole Lodge No. 13 A.F. & A.M. A veteran of World War I, he was affiliated with American Legion Post 82. He was also a member of the Iowa State Police Officers Association. Following his retirement from the police force, he worked at the post office for four years.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a step son, Charles Underwood, Ft. Madison; two brothers, Arthur Poling, Keosauqua, and Harley Poling, Cantril; and six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Otto, and five sisters. His parents were Marion and Lula Mankin Poling.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Clements' chapel, Ft. Madison, the Rev. Gerald Sawyer officiating. Burial was in Hill Crest Memorial Park with veterans escort. Masonic rites were conducted at the Clements' at 7:30 Tuesday, Oct. 29.
