Ottumwa, Iowa, Monday, January 10, 1977

ESMOND L. WELLS

STOCKPORT - Esmond L. Wells, 80, of Stockport, died Saturday at Jefferson Count Hospital in Fairfield after a lengthy illness.

He was born June 21, 1896, at Big Stone Gap, Va., to Monroe and Druzilla Harris Wells. On Jan. 2, 1922, he married Evangie Loretta Collier at Big Stone Gap. She survives.

Also surviving are seven sons, James of Durant, Marvin of Monroe, Wis., Donald of St. Lois, Charlie of Sheldahl, Andy of Los Angeles, Calif., Larry of Des Moines and David of Alexis, Ill.; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Kaplan of Tucson, Ariz., and Mrs. Esther Schwerin of Burlington; 23 grandchildren; two brothers, Robert of Jarris, Ore., and Jerry of Stockport; and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Miner of Stockport.

A World War I veteran, he was a member of Elvin E. Cecil American Legion Post 147 of Stockport. He had farmed most of his life in Jefferson and Van Buren counties before retiring and moving to Stockport.

The service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Stockport Christian Church, with Brother Carl E. Mast officiating. Burial will be in Spencer Cemetery.

The family will be at Burch Funeral Home in Birmingham tonight from 7 to 8:30.

A memorial has been established to the Stockport Library and contributions may be left at the funeral home.
