MELVIN ROSS

DOUDS - E. Melvin Ross, 58, of Douds died Sunday at 6:25 p.m. at Van Burren County Hospital in Keosauqua, which he had entered Saturday.

He was born Nov. 25, 1917, at Deep River to Guy and Elsie Byer Ross. He graduated in 1937 from Richland High School.

On Sept. 28, 1945, he married Esther Laughlin at Libertyville, and they lived most of their married life in the Douds community. He was employed as weighmaster for Douds Stone, Inc., until ill health forced his retirement in 1969.

Surviving are his widow; four sons, John of Blue Springs, Mo., Harold of Douds and Russell and Tom both at home; three daughters, Shirley of Independence, Mo., Donna of Douds and Gail at home; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Black of Oakdale, Calif., and Louise Snyder of Rockville, Md.; and one brother, Allen of Lenexa, Kan.

A son Robert was killed in a car accident near Eldon last September.

Mr. Ross was a member of Starlight Lodge 350 of Knights of Pythias, Douds Temple 104 of Pythian Sisters, and El Zira Lodge 23 of D.O.K.K. He had served as scoutmaster at Douds for a number of years.

The service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with the Rev. Donald Strauch officiating. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery near Douds.

Memorial contributions may be left at the funeral home.
