Willard E. Carruthers, son of Lee and Stella Else Carruthers, was born February 15, 1914 at Mt. Sterling and departed this life the morning of Friday, February 5, 1988 in Lutheran Hospital, Moline, Illinois at the age of 73.
He farmed early in life and for many years was employed as a meat cutter. He was a member of the Keosauqua Christian Church and Keosauqua Lodge No. 10, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
He was united in marriage to Evelyn Burkett, January 2, 1937 at Kahoka, Missouri. She preceded him in death in 1984. A daughter, Charlotte Overstreet and a brother, Fred Carruthers also preceded him in death.
Surviving are five sons, Dr. Richard Carruthers, Davenport; Darrell, Mt. Pleasant; Steve, Blue Springs, Missouri; Fred, Mediapolis, IA; and Dan, Valencia, Calif.; two daughters, Sue Gilchrist, Burlington, IA., and Deb Kirchner, Ottuwma; 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Paul, Ft. Myers, Florida and Russell, Mt. Pleasant, Ia., and two sisters, Pearl Carr and Eva Oswalt, both of Keosauqua, Ia.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 8, 1988 at 10:30 a.m. in the Keosauqua Christian Church with Rev. Bob Patterson officiating. Masonic rites by Keosauqua Lodge No. 10 were held at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua Sunday evening. A memorial was established.
Interment was in Fellows Cemetery, Keosauqua, IA.
