BIRMINGHAM BOY STRUCK*KILLED BY CAR

A 4-year-old Birmingham boy, Thomas Ray, McCarty, was struck and killed by a car Saturday evening while playing along a county road about two miles west of Keosauqua.

Van Buren county sheriff's authorities said the McCarty boy and his brother, Leslie Duane, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie McCarty, rural Birmingham, were playing in a roadside ditch near the home of their grandmother, between 6:30-7 p.m. Saturday. The boys apparently darted into the road in the path of a car driven by James Krouse, rural Keosauqua, who told officers he was blinded by lights from an oncoming car. The older McCarty boy is in good condition at Memorial Hospital, Keosauqua, with abrasions.

Services for Thomas Ray McCarty were conducted by the Rev. Donald Strauch at the Keosauqua United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial was in Pittsburg cemetery. Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, was in charge of arrangements.

He was born January 3, 1971, at Fairfield. The family moved from Douds to Birmingham community in 1973. Presently the family is living at the home of the boy's grandmother, Mrs. Thomas Lewman, in front of whose house the accident occurred.

Surviving, besides the parents, brother, and grandmother, are four brothers, Spec. 4 Ronald McRoy, USA, Ft. Polk, La., and William and Carl McRoy, Donald Banes; and a sister, Brenda McCarty, at home.
