Walter J. Cox, eldest child of Leslie E. and Flossie Edith [Oosthoek] Cox was born in Van Buren County near Keosauqua, Iowa, July 25, 1921. He departed this life in Ottwuma, Iowa, July 7, 1940, as the result of an automobile accident at the age of 18 years, 11 months and 12 days.
He leaves his father and mother and two brothers and two sisters, Wanda Louise Cox, Wayne Robert Cox, Wilma May Cox and Warren Glen Cox; two uncles, Harold E. Cox, Columbus, Ohio; Glen N. Cox, Baton Rouge, La; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Oosthoek of Kilbourne, Iowa and step grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Brewster of Bonapart, Iowa and other relatives and friends.
Walter was a student in Milton High School and would have been a member of the senior class this year. He was a high standing student, and was popular with the students and held in high regard by the faculty.
He became a convert to Christianity in a revival meeting held by Rev. Albert Peterson at the Methodist church in Keosauqua, Iowa and later united with Grace Methodist church at Milton under the ministry of Rev. Harvey E. Butler.
He was a member of the Junior Wesleyan class of Grace Methodist Sunday school and a member of the Epworth League. He was a faithful Christian young man and we will miss him from church, church school and Epworth League. He resided for nearly four years with his parents on the farm southeast of Milton.
Funeral services were held in Grace Methodist hcurch Tuesday, July 9, 1940 at 2 p.m. His pastor, Rev. Harvey E. Butler conducted the services. The casket bearers were: Robert Holt, James Zeitler, Jerry Wilkening, Cklarence Cecil, Alfred Russell and Bob Craig. His body was laid to rest in the Kilbourne cemetery at Kilbourne, Iowa.
