Irene Ellis McBurney, 90 of Ames and formerly of Keosauqua died February 10, 1994 at Grand Ave. Care Center in Ames, Iowa.
She was born November 30, 1903 in Keosauqua to Charles S. and Sophia Seaman Ellis. She married Ray McBurney on June 29, 1941. He died March 30, 1988.
She received her bachelors degree in education from Drake University in 1953 and her masters in special education from University of Iowa in 1961. She was recognized as one of the leading special education teachers in Iowa. She taught at elementary school in Story City, Colo., Newton, Iowa and at the Nevada School System before her retirement in 1969.
After her retirement she continued to volunteer her time for special education and G.E.D. programs at DMMAC in Des Moines. She was a member of Retired Teacher's Association, A.A.R.P., First Christian Church in Ames and was a 50-year member of Iowa State Faculty Women's Club. She had been a resident of Ames since 1942.
The service was held February 14, 1994 at First christian Church in Ames, the Rev. David Digby officiating. Burial was in Cedar Township Cemetery in Fremont. Memorial to First Christian Church. Steven Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
