Harry W. Hill

Harry W. Hill, 97, passed away Tuesday morning in the Valley Nursing Home in Billings, Mont. where he had been for nearly two years. Mr. Hill was born July 16, 1975 in Browning, Mo., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hill. He married Iva Irene Holmes July 16, 1902 in Ft. Madison.

His first employment after graduation was a job as Warden's Deputy Clerk at State Prison in Ft. Madison and later became a guard there. They later moved to Milton and Harry and his father were postmasters there. From Milton he moved to Billings, Mont. in 1910 to work in Mowre's Cigar Store and later he and his wife opened the first cash and carry store in Billings. He was also a former Yellowstone Co. Court and Registrar of the U.S. Land Office in Billings. He often said 'Prisons were his hobby' and he spoke on several occasions on Prison Problems and their inmates. Mr. Hill was a member of Ashlar Masonic Lodge No. 29, having transferred his membership from the Milton Lodge, and the Scottish Rite Al Bedoo Shrine Temple in Billings.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Mrs. David Orser of London, England and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons and his wife. His body will be cremated and will probably be returned to Milton where his infant son, wife and parents are buried.
