Samuel H. Watkins

Samuel H. Watkins, age 94, died Saturday morning, July 8, 1972 in the Moore Nursing Home at Stockport. He had been in failing health the past year. Sam was born at Libertyville, Iowa, Dec. 19, 1877, the son of Samuel H. Watkins and Sarah Harmon Watkins.

He was married to Mame E. Cleasby, Oct. 16, 1901, in Libertyville. To this union was born two children, Harold W. Watkins, who died, Aug. 21, 1957, and a surviving daughter, Mildred Newman of Stockport. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Florence Watkins of Libertyville; a son-in-law, Hugh G. Newman; three grandchildren, Mrs. Janie Allison of Liberty, Mo., Ned Newman of Florissant, Mo., and Kriss Newman; also three great-grandchildren, Jon, Sue, and Gary Allison. Also a niece, Mrs. Ruth Ann Oakes of Clemson, South Carolina; a nephew, George Watkins of Phoenix, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his wife, one brother and two sisters.

He and his wife lived on the farm where he was born, one-half mile east of Libertyville for 27 years. In April, 1928 they moved to Stockport where he helped organize the Iowa State Bank. He was cashier until 1932 and then president until January, 1971 and still a director. He was also president of the Libertyville Savings Bank for 30 years and still a director, and had been recognized by the Iowa Banking Department for being a director in banks for 66 years, since 1906.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Stockport, and a charter member of the Lions Club.

The service, arranged by the Catcott Funeral Home, Keosauqua, was held Monday, July 10 at the United Methodist Church in Stockport with Rev. Kenneth Suetterlin officiating. The interment was in Fell Cemetery at Libertyville.
