Nedra Atkins

Nedra Atkins, only child of Maurice and Letha Rhoades Atkins was born June 14, 1910 in Milton and died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1982, at Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield at the age of 72.

She gew up in Milton, graduated from the local high school and attended Parsons college in Fairfield, after which she taught in the Milton elementary school.

She later lived and worked in Fort Madison, Jackson, Missouri, and Bloomfield. For a number of years she was a congressional receptionist in Washington, D.C., retiring to Milton in 1975.

Nedra was an active member of the Milton Christian Church and Chapter AD, PEO in Milton, and a fifty year member of the Order of Eastern Star in Twin City Chapter No. 258, Douds.

Remaining are two cousins, Norvin Gilchrist of Fort Madison and James Gilchrist of Ottumwa; other cousins, her life-long close friend, LaVon Hargrove of Milton, and many close friends everywhere she lived, those she called her family.

Nedra's Christian life and high ideals were an inspiration to all who knew her.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 3, 1982, at 1:30 p.m. in the Milton Christian Church, with Bruce Hofmann and Rev. Ellis Andrews officiating. Interment was in Sunnyside Cemetery Milton. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home Keosauqua. A memorial was established for her church.
