Ruby Speer Atkins

Ruby Speer Atkins, a former resident of the Milton and Bloomfield area, died on Wednesday morning, Jan. 18, 1984.

Ruby Speer was born on Sept. 12, 1897 to Jacob and Virginia Speer near Downing, Mo., where she spent her early years.

She married Ross H. Atkins on Oct. 16, 1915. He preceded her in death on Jan. 3, 1953. They had five children: Virgil of Florida, Bill of Burlington, Iowa, Virginia Collins of Cincinnati, Ohio, Gene, also of Cincinnati, and Freda, deceased.

Ruby was a mother and a homemaker on farms near Milton and Bloomfield. She moved to Burlington after her husband's death.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, and was active in the church while her health permitted.

She is survived by her sons, Virgil, Gene and Bill, and a daughter, Virginia Collins, and one sister-in-law, Naomi Carpenter in Milton, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and many friends.

Services were held at the Lunning Chapel in Burlington at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, Jan. 21, 1984, with Dr. Bruce Fuller as officiate. Graveside services were held at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton with Rev. Charles Butler in charge.
