Charles Spates

FAIRFIELD - Charles D. Spates, 68, of 406 W. Kirkwood St. died at 12:45 a.m. July 24, 1984, in University Hospitals in Iowa City.

He was born June 18, 1916, in Oskaloosa to Charles A. and Nina Stringfellow Spates. He married I. Lucille Littrel on Sept. 23, 1939, at the First United Methodist Church at Fairfield. He lived in Fairfield for 48 years and was a research and development engineer at ACCO, Loudens division, before he retired. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign War.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Leah Canfield of Fairfield; a son, Lloyd of Keosauqua; and four grandchildren.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, the Rev. Clair Odell officiating. Burial will be in Letts Cemetery at Letts.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to his church or the heart fund.
