Frank O. Clark was born in Cattaraugus county, New York, and at the time of his death was about 70 years of age. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Mason, of Franklinville, New York, in 1853, and moved to Bentonsport, Van Buren county, Iowa, in 1857. In 1867 Mr. Clark and wife moved to Des Moines where they conducted a large and successful millinery business which in 1883 they sold to their brother James L. Mason, of Des Moines, who still owns the store. Later they returned to Bentonsport, refitted and furnished the "Phoenix Hotel" and for a few years enjoyed life among their old time friends. Returning again to their city home in Des Moines in 1894, they remained until October 12, 1899, when they moved to Washington, D. C., for a few years, as Mr. Clark had secured a position in the office of Public Printer Palmer, formerly publisher of the State Register.
Mr. Clark had not been in robust health for some time and an acute attack of indigestion caused his sudden death, at 1:30 o'clock Saturday, December 23, 1899. Mrs. Clark was so completely prostrated by the sudden shock, that the westward trip for burial was deferred until spring. It is the intention to bring the remains to Bentonsport for interment beside those of an infant daughter and other relatives.
