Charles Beard was born in Cedar township, near Big Mound Jan. 19, 1860, passed away at Sacred Heart hospital in Ft. Madison Tuesday, August 17, 1926, after an illness of two weeks. He was the son of William and Mary Bristow Beard. Mr. Beard's parents were natives of England, coming here in 1848, and settling with an English colony in Lee county.

It was here that Mr. Beard, with his seven brothers and eight sisters grew to manhood.

Oct. 14, 1886, he was married to Miss Emma Pease, who with five children survive him--Boyd of Rock Island, Ill.; Mrs. Margaret Shelberg who lives on the home farm near Big Mound; Harriett Ada of Chicago; Mrs. Mary Samson and Raymond of Ft. Madison; five grand children; two brothers, Fremont of Memphis, Mo., and Thomas of Bonaparte, and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Green of Donnellson, Mrs. Anna Dick of Cedar Falls, Mrs. Rose Stephenson of Ottumwa and Mrs. Lizzie Hilman of Oregon. Two brothers preceded him in death less than three months ago, William of Bonaparte and Arnold of Montrose.

Mr. Beard retired from active farm life six years ago and moved to Ft. Madison, whee [sic] he lived at the time of his death. He had been a guard of the Iowa State prison for five years and was a valued and trusted employe of the institution.

He was a faithful and consistent christian and a member of the Presbyterian church at Sharon and always gave liberally toward its support.

For a number of years Mr. Beard had been a member of Masonic fraternity, having his Blue Lodge membership at Bonaparte and being a member of the Shrine at Davenport. He had taken 32 degrees in Masonry.

Mr. Beard was an honest and upright citizen, a helpful and considerate neighbor and a kind husband and father. The many beautiful floral offerings gave mute testimony of the esteem of his friends.

Short funeral services were held at the Clements chapel Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock and at Sharon at 3 p.m., Rev. Mitchell, chaplain of the I.S.P., preaching the sermon. The services at the grave were in charge of the Blue Lodge of Bonaparte, assisted by Masons from Hillsboro, Salem and Donnellson. Interment in the Sharon cemetery.
