Lew R. Stevens, Sr., 71, of 1125 Hammond Avenue, Ottumwa, died Saturday, March 16 at 5:05 P.M. at St. Joseph Hospital, Ottumwa, after a long illness. He had been an employe of Barker Poultry Equipment Co. for 23 years prior to his retirement in 1951.

The son of John and Fannie Hawk Stevens, he was born in Van Buren County, May 4, 1896. Stevens was a resident of Ottumwa for over 40 years. He was a veteran of World War I, entering the service on April 29, 1918, at Keosauqua, and was discharged July 23, 1919 at Camp Dodge.

He was married to Anna Carlson, who preceded him in death in 1938. In December of 1939, he married Helen Ricahrs, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Lew R. Stevens, Jr., of Ottumwa; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Louis McSparen of Ottumwa; one nephew, Stanley Stevens of Ottumwa; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Howard, in 1963.

Funeral services were Tuesday at 3 P.M. at Johnson Funeral Chapel, Ottumwa. The Rev. John Groen, pastor of First Church of the Open Bible officiating. Burial was in Shaul Cemetery, where military services were held at the grave by the Ottumwa American Legion Post. Pallbearers were Glen Avery, Art Guest, Virgil Bankson, Mike Dailey, John Farrell and Duane Peterson.

Lew lived for many years at Bonaparte where he was raised. He was well known here. He is a cousin of Joe and Lloyd Stevens of Bonaparte.
