Death of Samuel McMullen

Samuel Percy McMullen, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McMullen was born in Jefferson County, Iowa, Nov. 12, 1868, and died at his home in Birmingham, Sunday, Jan. 4th, 1914, at 5:30 a.m., after an illness of about one year with asthma.

He was united in marriage Nov. 1st, 1899, to Ida Mary Ford in Winchester. Four children were the result of this union, one son, Fred, aged 14 years and twin daughters, Esther Mary and Edith May aged 8 years, who are left to need the care of a father, and one child died in infancy.

He wife departed this life Jan. 29th, 1912, leaving him to care for the three children and nobly did he labor and fulfill his duty. His entire life was spent in the southern part of Jefferson and northern Van Buren counties. Since the death of his wife he has been in poor health, and though gradually failing, he kept at work every day it was possible and did all in his power to provide for and keep a home for his little family.

He is survived by his mother Mrs. McMullen of Fairfield, four sisters, Mrs. Cora Crowner, Mrs. Mattie Carmichael, Mrs. Anna Gudgell of Lewiston, Ill., Mrs. Effie Miranda, and one brother William S. of Fairfield, all were present at the funeral except Mrs. Gudgell.

Funeral services were held in the M. E. Church Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Rev Crowther in charge, and he was buried in the Winchester cemetery beside the wife and child who had preceded him in death.
