Lizzie Pollock

Elizabeth Emily Pollock, daughter of Thomas P. and Mary Ann Sherer Douds, was born September 16, 1888, at Douds and departed this life Sunday Sept. 24, 1967, at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 79.

On February 16, 1910, she married Dr. Roscoe Pollock, who preceded her in death in 1946. Three sisters and six brothers also preceded her in death. Remaining to mourn her passing are her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Sutherland of Anchorage, Alaska; her four sons, John of Augusta, Georgia; Robert of Kirkwood, Missouri; Davis of Douds; and Larry of Anchorage, Alaska; 8 grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

Mrs. Pollock was the granddaughter of David Doud, one of the founders of Douds.

Except for brief periods her entire life was spent in Douds. She combined the role of country doctor's wife with that of mother and community leader in ad admirable fashion, and will be long remembered for her many acts of kindness and assistance to those in sickness and distress.

Lizzie, as she was know to her friends, was a member of Christ Methodist Church and its Women's Society of Christian Service; John Hyson Reneker Unit, American Legion Auxiliary; and was a Past Matron and Live member of Twin City Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. Her contribution to the various organizations, especially her unselfish sharing of her musical ability, were an inspiration to all with whom she came in contact.

Funeral services were held Wednesday Sept. 27, 1967 at 2 P.M. at Christ Methodist Church in Douds, with the Rev. Dennis Nicholson, pastor officiating. Vocalists were Mrs. Keith A. Smith and Mrs. Robert Pedrick. Organists were R. Larry Pollock and Mrs. Charley Kunzman. Pall bearers were John W. Boyer, Dale Morrow, Berdott Grubbs, Marvin Roush, William Barker and T.O. Nutt. Interment was in the Mount Moriah Cemetery north of Douds. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home.
