MRS. MARY E. COWAN
Mrs. Mary E. Cowan died Sunday March 30th, 1924, 9:25 o'clock a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. C. Wilkinson, aged 84 years, 2 months and 22 days.
Mary E. Cowan, daughter of John and Lucinda Mowie, was born in Decatur county, Indiana, Jan. 8th, 1840. She came with her parents to Iowa in 1847 and settled near Lebanon, Van Buren County, Iowa. They later moved to Davis county and there was married to Samuel Cowan, May 11, 1858. To this union were born five children, two of whom died in infancy. Her husband died Oct. 19, 1912 in Ottumwa, which place they had made their home for a long time.
Three daughters, Mrs. Nettie Taylor, Oakland, Calif.; Mrs. Annie Murphy, Ottumwa, Iowa; Mrs. Mattie Wilkinson, and her husband, Charles Wilkinson of Bonaparte, Iowa; also 2 grand children, Mrs. Ruth Halsell of Livermore, Calif.; Miss Marie Murphy of Ottumwa, Iowa are left to feel the loss of mother.
She was a life long member of the Methodist church, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 45 years or more being made a member before a charter was granted in Iowa. A host of friends will mourn her.
Funeral services were held at the Wilkinson home on Tuesday evening. The body was taken to Ottumwa Wednesday for interment.
