Douds Boy Killed In Tractor Accident

Gerald Alvia Lennox, 16 of rural Douds, was killed in a tractor accident which took place near Douds at 7 p.m. Monday.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Lennox.

Driving the tractor was his cousin, William Shilling, 15, of Route 3, Bloomfield, who was taken to Van Buren County Memorial Hospital at Keosauqua for observation.

The accident took place a quarter of a mile west of the south end of the Douds-Leando bridge on the county river road.

The tractor careened off the north side of the road, upsetting and landing on the Lennox youth, who was dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital.

The cries of the Shilling boy were heard at the Jack Boyer and George Smead residences.

Young Shilling, son of Mrs. Florence Shilling of rural Bloomfield, had been visiting in the Lennox home. The two boys were on their way to Douds to have some car tires repaired when the accident occurred.

The body was taken to the Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Dennis Nicholson, Methodist pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa.

In 1955 the family moved to the Selma community and the youth spent the rest of his life in the Selma-Douds area. He was a 9th grade student at Cardinal School in Agency.
