Wilbert “Bert” LeRoy Holtkamp, 89, of rural Mt. Hamill, IA, passed away May 9, 2017, at the Klein Center in Burlington, IA.

Born August 29, 1927, in old Pilot Grove, IA, the son of Albert H. and Anna J. (Krittenbrink) Holtkamp. On June 20, 1950, he married Priscilla Ann Pieper at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton, IA. She preceded him in death on September 29, 2016.

Survivors include two daughters: Margaret "Peggy" Kaltefleiter of Coralville and Anne (Dan) Menke of Donnellson; three grandchildren: Alice (fiancé Adam Jennett) Comer of Lisbon, Megan (Alex) Scheer of Mt. Pleasant, and Justin Menke of West Des Moines; five great-grandchildren: Wilbert “Wil' and Sydnee Comer, Klay Scheer, and Jake and Sophie Jennett; two brothers: James (Carol) Holtkamp of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Larry (Cathy) Holtkamp of Salem, IA; one sister: Sr. Marilyn Holtkamp, OSF of Milwaukee, WI, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Priscilla, his parents, two sons, Anthony and Jesse, and one brother, Melvin.

Bert was a 1945 graduate of St. Mary's Catholic School in West Point. He was a member of St. James the Less Catholic Church where he served as eucharistic minister and lector. He served on the first God's Acre Sale Committee, he went on to attend every God's Acre Sale except for one. He was a past Grand Knight and life member of the Houghton Knights of Columbus Council #3905. Bert was a member of the Lee County Farm Bureau and led the Busy Workers 4-H Club for 10 years. He was a lifelong farmer and land conservation was very important to him. He enjoyed gardening, watching sports, golfing and card clubs. Spending time with his family was very important to him. He always took the time to talk to anyone he met, young or old and always had a smile on his face.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2017, at St. James the Less Catholic Church in St. Paul, IA, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 13, 2017, at St. James the Less Catholic Church in St. Paul, IA, with Father Bruce DeRammelaere as celebrant.

Burial will be at St. James Catholic Cemetery in St. Paul, IIA.

Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
